Once Again, The Oscars Snub Anime

Konichiwa, friends and associates

So the Oscar nominations for 2010 were announced recently. Take a look at the nominations for Best Animated Feature:
How to Train Your Dragon (Paramount) Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois
The Illusionist (Sony Pictures Classic) Sylvian Chomet
Toy Story 3 (Walt Disney) Lee Unkrich

Notice anything missing from that list? Not a single anime movie was on that list. Is the Academy really that blind? Are they completely oblivious to a little film called Summer Wars, easily one of the best animated films to recently come out of Japan? You know, the movie that won multiple awards from multiple film festivals? THAT one?

The Social Network would've been a lot more interesting if Facebook looked like this.

In case you are just as clueless as the Oscars, Summer Wars is a movie about online hacking where the virtual world and reality are in danger. It’s a lot like .hack//SIGN except it’s not as boring (ha ha, jk, I loved that show). Summer Wars was directed by Mamoru Hosoda who previously directed such anime masterpieces as The Girl Who Lept Through Time and Digimon: The Movie. It was a blockbuster in Japan ranking in $1 million in it’s opening weekend which I guess is pretty good by Japan’s standards. The Japanese Blu-Ray release set a new record beating out the previous spot held by Evangelion 1.0 (another film that deserved a nomination).

And you’re telling me none of that matters at all for a Best Animated Feature Nomination? Not even Best Original Song? Just listen to ‘Our Summer Dream’ and tell me that doesn’t deserve to win. When is Hollywood going to wake up and start recognizing anime for it’s true potential?

Just throw them away! End of movie!

As for those ‘nominations’ for Best Animated Feature, they are a far cry from the intensity of Summer Wars. Toy Story 3? What a joke! They are plastic toys that can be reassembled. Where is the danger? Where is the drama? The suspense of toys being attacked or thrown away cannot possibly compare to the nail-biter of when a satellite almost collides with a nuclear power plant. But, no, toys being thrown out is much more important and sad.

How to Train Your Dragon? Don’t make me laugh. I’m a big dragon lover and those were not dragons: those were cats. Way to child-proof your movie, Dreamworks. While I will admit the ending is a little sad, it can’t compare with the tragedy in Summer Wars when Sakae dies after the Love Machine AI hacks into her heart monitor.

Just so everybody is clear, this is NOT a dragon. Dragons do not act or look like this.

The Illusionist? I couldn’t see The Illusionist even if I wanted to because it never came to my theater. And, yes, I go to an independent theater (which is how I saw Summer Wars) so it would’ve been playing there but it wasn’t. Apparently it’s some French animated film about a magician. One of my foreign friends told me it’s about a dad trying to do his daughter which is disgusting! You’d never see something like that in a theatrical anime movie, believe you me.

I’m not really mad at the Academy. Just…disappointed. I had faith in them once when Spirited Away won for Best Animated Feature. But ever since then they have continued to let me down by ignoring some of the best anime movies of past years. Paprika, Tekkokinkreet, Ponyo, Tokyo Godfathers, Ghost in the Shell 2; all of these great works of art were passed in favor of mediocre dribble like Cars, Corpse Bride and Secret of Kells. If Evangelion 2.0 gets snubbed for next year’s nominations because of Cars 2, I’m done with Disney forever. That includes Studio Ghibli films they produce. Yes, Disney, I’m willing to go THAT far.

-Keep on Rockin’ That Dragon
P.S. Summer Wars will be on DVD/Blu-Ray February 15th. It’s a really good movie and you should probably buy it.

About Dragon Rocker Z

I'm rocking the Dragon! I love anime, manga, Pocky, Ramune, and pretty much anything that comes from Japan. I'm currently in college trying to get my degree in Japanese language. I hope to go to Japan and make anime!

I love how you criticize the Academy for “not accepting things out-of-the-norm” like anime, then go around and comment on how you wouldn’t see The Illusionist if it came to your theater. Without even knowing what it’s about. Nice hypocrisy there.

I’ve seen all four of these films. Summer Wars does not top TS3, HtTYD, or The Illusionist.

  3. Barack Obama's Long Lost White Son says:

I am so glad someone is out there issuing corrections on the anatomy and behavior of fictional creatures. Keeping on tackling those big issues.

  4. HArdboiled. says:

Everyone knows the animation Oscar is a give away award. On top of that, the Oscars is more domestic anyways, you really shouldn’t be complaining. You should be bitching at the golden globe awards. And if anything, Europe makes better animated movies anyways.

    Go cry harder weaboo.

Sorry, brah, but the Oscars are fairly obviously not designed for anime. If they put in anime, they’d have to put in french anime too, along with Korean, Chinese, and every other country that puts out some kind of animated movie.

Oh, and Toy Story 3 was god tier, even compared to Evangelion 2.0 or Summer Wars.

  6. mntl says:

7/10, i had to see this shit to believe it, troll or not, you are a gigantic faggot

  7. Thundarr says:

Good to know the Academy is doing their jobs and keeping anime away from normals.

  8. Jack Swift says:

Ya know why they snubbed anime? Take a look at the banner on the top of this page.

  9. Gideon Jura says:

Yes… somebody didn’t do his research. How to train your Dragon is based on a children’s book, one of it’s messages people come in different forms and behaviours so it tried to make non-linear species of Dragons. What? Did you prefer a movie about a kid trying to be friends to a ” Generic-Random-Reign-o’-Fire” Dragon?

Try looking for The Illusionist, if that excuse of “father trying to do his daughter” is the only thing stopping you from seeing it then please, search the plot of the anime called Koi Kaze.

  10. cesar says:

wow, you are just a fucking tard

while i do admit that the screen shots are amazing, the oscars are mainly for domestic or widespread movies. i never heard of any anime movies coming out in my theaters, seeing is that my island is situated right next to japan, i would have at least heard of it

don’t fucking badmouth anything that you have no idea of what it is about, all those “bad” movies you listed seem so to you, because you are narrow minded toward anime only, how biased

  11. HERP-A-DERP says:

Way to ignore the fact that Summer Wars came out in 2009, weeaboo

  12. DiegO says:

    Not sure if troll.

  13. Anon says:

There is obviously a difference between a japanese film that came out and is enjoyed by the weaboo population and Toy Story 3 which is the third and most likely final film(Unless they want to milk it) in a successful franchise. Cry fucking harder weaboo faggot.

Not to mention that the film in question was just an expansion of the digimon movie which was made ages ago and you didn’t fucking cry when they didn’t nominate that.

Honestly this is why you bastards are forever alone

    Yes I mad.

    Everyone mad in these comments.

  15. Baba Ganush says:

Wow…you are the reason I can’t talk to anime fans. You and your “grorious nippon” bullshit. I enjoy a good anime as much as the next guy, but god damn are you ass pained. They’re the Oscars. It’s not like they matter anyway. Go fap to your unnecessary panty-shots and come back when you remember that whatever imaginary man-made borders something was made within has no bearing on its quality.

It’s Konnichiwa, by the way. Two “n”s. You might want to actually study some Japanese.

    Yeah, you better be motherfucker.

    GoodJob!

Obviously the western audience that doesn’t know of the wonders of anime and manga are shutting themselves off to wonderful gems like this and if we had more like minded people like you in the world perhaps we could get some sort of movement working to our advantage and see quicker distribution of anime and mainstreaming the thing instead of having it be a “Dirty perverted hobby” I must admit though Toy Story 3 was a brilliant movie but the other two weren’t exactly good.

Keep up the good work man… Hopefully we can see the next naruto shippuden movie being nominated for an oscar. God i can’t wait until that day comes

  20. Anonymous says:

Your panty-shot banner really helps your case.

  21. Asarion says:

By saying Dragons look or act nothing like Toothless, you seem to be implying they are in fact real animals.

Also how is Toys being thrown away and feeling pain any less retarded than this

    >Sakae dies after the Love Machine AI hacks into her heart monitor.

Obviously both require you to care about the characters in question to even give a shit.

The fact this has eluded you can only lead me to assume you are a moron

  22. Derp the Herp says:

You know, when you dismiss 3 good movies with paper thin excuses and pet peeves and not by critical analysis you really seem desperate and frustated than a movie that you liked isn’t on the Oscars.

How about you drop the persecution angle, re-watch those movies, and enjoy it for what they are?

A hint: Toy Story tension wasn’t about toys being dismantled. It had a scene like that, sure. But the story was about something else that is related to this.

  28. C Ross says:

Someone should do a youtube rendition of this, kind of like the one nerd rant when Final Fantasy 13 was announced for X-Box 360.

  29. fa/tv/irgin says:

DON’T YOU EVER TALK ABOUT HTTYD EVER AGAIN OR I’LL NIBBLE YOUR GENITALS OFF.
